The above photo won first prize in the Sport Stories category at the 54th World Press Photo Contest. Over 5,691 photographers entered 108,059 images in the contest and after the two-week judging period, 56 were named winners in nine categories.

Andres Iniesta became a legend Sunday by scoring in extra time to give Spain their first World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in the final. Barcelona star Iniesta, who was named Man of the Match, scored the title-winning goal in the 116th minute in front of 84,490 spectators at Soccer City Stadium. Over 700 million people watched the game worldwide.

Iniesta’s shirt translates to “Dani Jarque, always with us”. Daniel Jarque González was a Spanish footballer, who played as a central defender at RCD Espanyol, and was named team captain one month before his death from a heart attack at the age of 26.

Photo Flash: Growing Forgiveness on the Field

From Chilean artist Sebastian Errazuriz’s Memorial of a Concentration Camp (2006):

A 10-meter magnolia tree is planted in the center of Chile’s National Stadium where dictator Pinochet in 1973 imprisoned thousands of political prisoners who were tortured and killed. After planting the tree, the stadium doors are open to the public as a park; offering a space to stop, look again, and remember. An impossible, cathartic soccer match played before 20.000 people, closed the project after a week of activity.

Watch: Free Fall

Free Fall is a video made by freedivers Guillaume Néry and Julie Gautier. You can see Guillaume doing a base jump into Dean’s Blue Hole. They say it’s a fictional and artistic project, they wanted to show another approach to freediving videos. Even Julie, who filmed everything with a Canon 5D Mark II, holds her breath the entire time.

This is the coolest thing I have ever seen on the internet.
