Exhibit: Museum of Craft and Folk Art “Volver: Mexican Folk Art into Play”

September 23, 2010 Art

The Museum of Craft and Folk Art (51 Yerba Buena Lane in SF, CA) presents an exhibition of contemporary art that activates Mexican folk art, including works by Adrian Esparza, Maximo Gonzalez, Armando Miguelez, Favianna Rodriguez and Eduardo Sarabia.

To celebrate Mexico’s Bicentennial Anniversary of Independence (September 15) and the Centennial of the Revolution (November 20), the Museum of Craft and Folk Art presents Volver: Mexican Folk Art into Play, an exhibition that looks to traditional crafts from Mexico and focuses on contemporary works that imbue the materials and processes of popular folk arts with conceptual potency.

Mexico’s strong history of traditional arts carries through to the present day through weaving, painting, carving, and manipulate materials. Many artists working today question the ability of those traditional objects to tell the full story of an evolving culture—and in response, new artisans and artists work to update, reform, and activate those original source traditions.

Volver: Mexican Folk Art into Play runs September 24, 2010—January 16, 2011.

Live Painting from San Francisco

November 26, 2008 Art, The Rathaus

In conjunction with Upper Playground, YouTube invited artists Alex Pardee, Sam Flores, David Choe, and Jeremy Fish to supply some live-painting as part of the pre-show event for a concert held in San Francisco. Although the video makes it hard to tell, the artists were only given a few hours to complete their pieces yet the work still looks refined and well-executed. David Choe painted four entire pieces during that time, one on top of the other, which was described by Pardee as being “pretty amazing”. We agree. Enjoy.
