Artist Shout Out: Kenichi Yokono

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

“Bury Deep in the Ground”

“Globe Jungle”

Artist Bio:

Kenichi Yokono uses traditional woodblock methodologies to address the comic book horrors of contemporary Japanese culture. Manga, anime, horror movies, and other stereotypical aspects of Japanese pop culture merge to present iconic images of buoyant menace and cruelty, which serve to contrast startlingly with the sugary cartoon characters that are also common. Although functioning woodblocks, the works are only ever exhibited directly and prints are never produced. Such a method maintains the primacy of the hand made object and the artist retains a tangible presence. These multiple oppositions in Yokono’s work results in pieces that are highly relevant critiques that retain a pleasing irony. (via  Mark Moore Gallery)

Charlatan, Martyr, Hustler

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

According to Joey Roth the designer responsible for this witty letterpress print:

I created this graphic for “Hustle”, the first issue of 48 Hours Magazine. It captures my approach to design: giving form to objects and then clearing a path for them to enter the world. The paper is 32# Lettra text weight stock. It’s soft, fabric-like, and warm white. It was printed by Dependable Letterpress in San Francisco’s Dogpatch. The edition is limited to 1,000 hand-signed and numbered letterpress prints. $25 + free shipping, buy it here

The only question is which one are you… a charlatan, a martyr or a hustler? I’m pleading the fifth.

Artist Shout Out: SWOON

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Video courtesy of Gestalten.tv

“SWOON’s worlds are often populated by realistically rendered– and evocatively cut-out– street people, often her friends and family. Riding bikes, talking on a stoop, going grocery shopping– these people traverse a cityscape of her own unique invention. Bridges, fire escapes, water towers and street signs create crisscrossing shadows and spaces through which her figures move. Inspired by both art historical and folk sources, ranging from German Expressionist wood block prints to Indonesian shadow puppets, SWOON is a master of using cut paper to play with positive and negative space in a conceptually driven exploration of the experience of the streets” (Deitch Projects).

SWOON is also a founding member of The Miss Rockaway Armada art collective, a group who built large rafts out of salvaged materials and floated them down the Mississippi River in 2006 and 2007. In the summer of 2008, SWOON presented a two-part exhibition with Deitch Projects called Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea, which included a large installation inside the gallery space as well as the journey of seven handmade sculptural wooden rafts from Troy, NY down the Hudson River and up the East River into New York City.
