Artist Shout Out: Susy Oliveira

Monday, August 30th, 2010

“Have Everything And Die”, 2009, c-prints on archival card and foamcore, 39 x 24 x 16 in

“The Girl and the Bear, 2008″, c-prints on archival card and foamcore, 108 x 108 x 22 in

Artist’s Approach:

Through her tri-dimensional works designed to evoke the virtual modelings simulating reality, Susy Oliveira questions our habits of replacing nature with fabricated replicas. In her works, there is a playful dynamic which associates the characteristics of photography with those inherent to sculpture. Their structure incorporates the angles and features of some giant origami. The photographs are mounted on each face of a volume to restore the three dimensions of the image. Through this process, the shape is both simplified and amplified, giving the photography a volume, an ambiguous character oscillating between reality and fiction. (via)

“Night eyes open”, 2007, c-prints on archival card and foamcore, 20 x 24 x 6 in

“Time is never wasted”, 2006, c-prints and foamcore, 144 x 58 x 15 in

Go See: “Engaged Observers, Documentary Photography Since the Sixties” at The Getty

Friday, August 20th, 2010

“La Batea Colony, Zacatecas, Mexico” by Larry Towell

The Getty Center (1200 Getty Center Drive in Los Angeles, CA) presents Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography Since the Sixties. The show runs through November 14 and includes work from:

Philip Jones Griffiths
Leonard Freed
Eugene and Aileen M. Smith
Susan Meiselas
Mary Ellen Mark
Lauren Greenfield
Larry Towell
Sebastião Salgado
James Nachtwey

From the gallery:

In the decades following World War II, an independently minded and critically engaged form of photography began to gather momentum. Its practitioners have combined their skills as artists and reporters, creating extended photographic essays that delve deeply into topics of social concern and present distinct personal visions of the world.

Engaged Observers looks in depth at projects by a selection of the most vital photographers who have contributed to the development of this approach. Passionately committed to their subjects, they have authored evocative bodies of work that are often published extensively as books and transcend the realm of traditional photojournalism.

Friday, August 20th, 2010

In 2003, Florian Jenett and Valentin Beinroth placed about 50 of their handgun replicas made from tinted ice in downtown Frankfurt for a project entitled Freeze!. Photo Flash: Shanghai Dreamers, Quentin Shih for Christian Dior

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Photographer Quentin Shih has joined forces again with fashion house Christian Dior to create this photo series entitled Shanghai Dreamers (see images of their 2008 collaboration here). The images will be displayed in windows of the reopened Shanghai Dior boutique.

Artist Statement

My inspiration came from a certain Chinese style of group photography but these ceremonial photographs marks a departure from a certain historical period and herald the future. I created some typical Chinese groupings; they replace themselves, wearing plastic clothes. They stand on display in vast spaces or upon a stage – because they were, and still are dreamers. As China enters a new era, they begin to stand together on a world stage, self-conscious and yet filled with power.
