Crafted over the span of ten years the Ballerina Project is not “dance photography” but an etching of a ballerinas heart and emotions.

Every aspect of the Ballerina Project is carefully crafted and cultivated. The project has been photographed entirely on traditional photographic film and not with modern digital cameras. The majority of ballerinas who have posed for the project are professional dancers and the minority are advanced ballet students in renown dance schools. The crafts of dance and photography are truly upheld on both ends of the creation of the Ballerina Project.

Artist Bio:

Dane Shitagi is a New York City-based photographer. Originally from Honolulu, Dane had dreams of becoming a photographer from a very young age and soon began to work professionally in photography at the age of 15. He moved to New York in 1996, taking inspiration from the sights & sounds of the city as well as the energy & diverse arts that thrive here. Rather than molding his ideas to the studio setting, he has taken his creativity and inspiration from the world outside – preferring the rawness and atmosphere that only a living city can bring. In addition to the Ballerina Project, Dane has photographed personalities such as fashion designer Gaby Basura, writer Plum Sykes & socialite Tinsley Mortimer for American Vogue Magazine. He also works for a number of commercial clients including Sony Ericcson, Capezio, & Fujifilm.

Ballerina Project Website

Ballerina Project Facebook

Kate – Williamsburg

Alex – Manhattan Bridge

Andrea – 66th & Broadway

Alex – Coney Island

Stephanie – Central Park

Print

Photo File: William Eggleston

Photography

photo file

William Eggleston

Artist Bio: William Eggleston b. 1939 Memphis, Tennessee photographer American William Eggleston assumes a neutral gaze and creates his art from commonplace subjects: a farmer’s muddy Ford truck, a red ceiling in a friend’s house, the contents of his own refrigerator. In his work, Eggleston photographs “democratically”–literally photographing the world around him. His large-format prints monumentalize everyday subjects, everything is equally important; every detail deserves attention.

A native Southerner raised on a cotton plantation in the Mississippi Delta, Eggleston has created a singular portrait of his native South since the late 1960s. After discovering photography in the early 1960s, he abandoned a traditional education and instead learned from photographically illustrated books by Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Robert Frank. Although he began his career making black-and-white images, he soon abandoned them to experiment with color technology to record experiences in more sensual and accurate terms at a time when color photography was largely confined to commercial advertising. In 1976 with the support of John Szarkowski, the influential photography historian, critic, and curator, Eggleston mounted “Color Photographs” a now famous exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. William Eggleston’s Guide , in which Szarkowski called Eggleston’s photographs “perfect,” accompanied this groundbreaking one-person show that established his reputation as a pioneer of color photography. His subjects were mundane, everyday, often trivial, so that the real subject was seen to be color itself. These images helped establish Eggleston as one of the first non-commercial photographers working in color and inspired a new generation of photographers, as well as filmmakers.

Eggleston has published his work extensively. He continues to live and work in Memphis, and travels considerably for photographic projects. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future.

LUCIA IN 1956 & 2010, Buenos Aires

NICO IN 1990 & 2010, France

FER IN 1970 & 2010, Buenos Aires

MECHI IN 1990 & 2010, Buenos Aires

LULU & G in 1980 & 2010, Buenos Aires

DAMIAN IN 1989 & 2010, London

Print

Photo File: Boogie

B. Plus the entire process, from coating to developing, had to be done before the plate dried. This gives the photographer no more than 10 minutes to complete everything.

“It was amazing to feel like an alchemist, mixing chemicals and pouring plates in my tiny dirty basement. Thereʼs dust and dirt everywhere and temperature varies, so the results are unpredictable. After doing the first few plates, I realised that something about this process captures peoplesʼ darker side. So I named the series Demons. In the 1960s and 70s, the former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito commissioned these structures to commemorate sites where WWII battles took place (like Tjentište, Kozara and Kadinjača), or where concentration camps stood (like Jasenovac and Niš). Designed by different sculptors (Dušan Džamonja, Vojin Bakić, Miodrag Živković, Jordan and Iskra Grabul, to name a few) and architects (Bogdan Bogdanović, Gradimir Medaković…), the strong and powerful blending of art and architecture come together in these monuments to convey the sense of confidence and strength of the Socialist Republic. However, after the Republic gradually died down in 1992, they lost their sense of wonder and no longer attracted the millions of visitors a year. From 2006 to 2009, Jan Kempenaers toured around the ex-Yugoslavia region to photograph these amazing structures.

source: Crack Two

See more images here

Print

Photo File: Evita Weed

Photography

Evita Weed

photo file

Artist Bio: Evita Weed (Eva M ª González López) was born in 1986 in a small village in the province of Jaen in Andalusia. In 2002, Evita moved to Granada (Spain), where she began studying photography and developing her own style. Here she started to see photography as more than just an activity but as a way to translate her feelings and impressions in the light and transform them into something tangible that can be seen in the paper.

Although born in the digital age, Evita Weed, focuses primarily on film. Her images are characterized by a touch of melancholy; soft subtle tones of vintage analog grain conveying a sense of time unrecognizable; and a well-studied use of light, where natural light is the key theme of the collection.

The picture for me is my window to the world. Everything around me is a huge desert of asphalt that I’m trying to escape, futile resistance against the loss of innocence. There are thousands of times in life, and some of them deserve to be captured. It’s so easy to get carried away and jump into the imaginary world of sublime landscapes, dynamic skies, dreamlike landscapes and feelings hidden in remote corners unimaginable.

See more on Evita Weed’s Website, Flickr, Tumblr, Issuu

Print

Photo File: Matthew Brandt “Lakes and Reservoirs”

Photography

Matthew Brandt

nature

photo file

Matthew Brandt lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. From an early age she devoted herself to dancing, a passion which led her to Amsterdam where she studied theatre-dance at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten for three years. Back in France, she became increasingly interested in photography, which she sees as by essence connected to dance. Today, she works as a freelance photographer and contemporary dancer. “To create and to share my vision is a need and a goal after which I go unwaveringly. Inspiration overwhelms me ceaselessly – day…and night! My work is made up of my memories, my emotions, my hopes, my thoughts, and my inner turbulences. There is a certain wistfulness about it – a shroud of reverie perhaps”

See and learn more via Facebook and Flickr

Purchase prints on Etsy

Print

Photo File: End of the Road – 40 Photos From BBC’s Human Planet

B.
