Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project is pleased to present OUT OF THE FRYING PAN AND INTO THE FIRE, new work by Aaron Storck and Lee Piechocki. Painting, video, and installation addressing—with fascination and skepticism—the boundary-blurring trends in contemporary art. Artists’ remarks at 6pm. Public discussion with artists: Saturday, February 26, 2pm. Free and open to the public.

“The stability of the modernist era has disintegrated into a multiplicity of art making approaches. Artists, historians, critics, and theorists have systematically dismantled barriers and effectively opened the floodgates. Art, it seems, can be anything. We are free, but this freedom does not come without a price. The current pluralistic art milieu is unpredictable and chaotic, a tangled mess of methodologies.” So write artists Lee Piechocki and Aaron Storck, whose new exhibition, Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire, explores this idea of the contemporary “mess,” its problematics and its potential. To do so, they draw subject matter from the immediate environments of their studios, and the messes, piles, stacks, and accumulations therein, while also drawing on their observations and perceptions of far-ranging aspects of contemporary culture and art, as well as theory, including the writings of Nicolas Bourriaud and his concept of Relational Aesthetics and the Altermodern. The exhibition will include new still-life paintings and a series of sculptural objects/arrangements by Lee Piechocki, and a new large-scale multi-media diptych painting, an installation, two videos, and studies by Aaron Storck.

• Dirty Felts: a group printmaking show
Hobbs Taylor Lofts (740 New Hampshire in Lawrence, KS)

Featuring the work of: Tori Basore, Abby Bloss, Jill Burcke, Dani Carson, Grace Chin, Kandice Hall, Kevin Kinkaid, Jessica Langley, Neal Nickel, Catherine Meihaus, Ann Putrah, Melissa Sowards, Sarah Swyers, Olivia Tedford, Rachel Thomas, Clint Thrasher, Ashley Warner, and more! Dirty Felts was a title derived from our experiences in the intaglio studio. Etching processes utilize presses and felt blankets (to distribute pressure evenly) when printing the images. While snowy white felts are a hallmark of professional practices, dirty felts are usually the handiwork of students. “Dirty Felts” makes playful reference to the trial and error that went into producing the final work. Come join KU’s Fall ’10 Intaglio classes (taught by Kelly Clark) in celebrating a successful semester of printmaking!

• Celebrate People’s History: Poster of Resistance and Revolution

50+ posters from the Celebrate People’s History project (and now book), organized by Josh MacPhee of the Just Seeds artists’ cooperative, that pay tribute to revolution, racial justice, women’s rights, queer liberation, labor struggles, and creative activism and organizing. Celebrate People’s History! presents these essential moments – acts of resistance and great events in an often hidden history of human and civil rights struggles – as a visual tour through decades and across continents, from the perspective of some of the most interesting and socially engaged artists working today, including the Percolator’s own Dave Loewenstein.

In addition to the CPH posters, the Percolator will show posters from Lawrence collections that respond to and illuminate local struggles from the past forty years.

• Zeitgeist: Moving Forward

Zeitgeist: Moving Forward is a feature length experimental documentary that assembles experts in the fields of public health, anthropology, neurobiology, economics, energy, technology, social science, and other relevant subjects that relate to social operation and culture. The three central themes of the film pertain to Human Behavior, Monetary Economics, and Applied Science. WATCH THE TRAILER: http://www.filmsforaction.org/Watch/Zeitgeist_Moving_Forward_trailer. The film is the culmination and product of The Zeitgeist Movement and is being screened worldwide on a non-commercial independent basis by supporters of the film and participants of the Zeitgeist organization and Films For Action. For this show I have made a bunch of little drawings about Dennis Hopper. The actors recent passing awakened a personal interest in his life story, and this work recounts my discoveries.

• ‘Zines Made To Order: An Art Event & Interactive Performance

Join the Wonder Fair family for their brand new interactive art event & performance. It’s “Zines Made To Order” organized in conjunction with Paragraph’s current exhibition PAGES: Book as Medium, Catalyst, Venue. Gallery attendees will create a one-of-a-kind-made-to-order ‘zine which will be organized, printed, and bound on the spot! The ‘zine will be produced assembly line style by the Wonder Fair Family, and will feature reproductions of drawings produced specifically for this event by Family Members Jason Barr, Kelly John Clark, Eric Dobbins, and Lee Piechocki. The content of each ‘zine will depend on how each participant chooses to fill out Wonder Fair’s DIY ‘Zine Questionnaire, which includes interchangeable narrative options relating to characters, problems and settings. Though viewing the performance will be free of charge, the cost of ordering a personalized ‘zine will be $4, and will include a raffle ticket for a hand printed Wonder Fair tee shirt!

Jerry Kunkel’s two west-facing images, titled Memories Are…, play with ideas of fact and fiction, past and present, the nature of memory, and the veracity of photographic representation. Juxtaposing the front and back of a postcard against two views of the specific location it apparently depicts, Kunkel invites the viewer “to fill in the blanks, conjure a short response, and consider what may have transpired.”

Adolfo Martinez’s east-facing Artboards, titled We’re Not in Kansas Anymore, feature robots pulled from pop culture set amidst the Kansas City skyline: Robby the Robot, from the movie “Forbidden Planet,” Gort from “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” and robots from “Lost in Space,” “March of the Robots,” Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis, ” and a B movie called “Robot Monster.” While injecting a sense of humor and fantasy into the downtown landscape, this line-up of visitors from different eras and planets also offers a poignant portrait of changing cultural portrayals of the futuristic “other.”
