Update: King Khan & BBQ Show’s Lawrence, KS Gig Is (Sort Of) Canceled After Arrest

November 13, 2009 Art, The Rathaus

kk&bbq1_hires

The raw as an open sore, psycho-soul duo known as King Khan & BBQ Show were scheduled to play Lawrence, KS tonight, November 13 at the Jackpot Saloon (943 Massachusetts) with cute country-punkers Those Darlins and local favorites The Spook Lights. This was your chance to catch one of the most outrageous live music experiences in the known world, and on Friday the 13th no less. But alas King Khan and BBQ Show portion of the show is canceled because according to the band’s booking agent Sam Hunt of the Windish Agency, King Khan and BBQ are “stuck in Christin County, Kentucky for time being” after being arrested en route to a St. Louis gig they never made. No word on what the band is being charged with as of yet. Believe us Lawrence, we’re every bit as bummed you.

But it’s not all bad news, because Jessi Darlins of the Those Darlins says “we’re still planning on playin’ the craziest fuckin’ show in hopes of lifting any KKBBQ fans spirits and keepin’ this badass tour on the move. We are so proud to be playing with this band and just want to keep the tour rollin.’” Also, Jessi’s fiance John McCauley of Deer Tick is going to fill in till King Khan & BBQ Show can get this sorted out. Tickets for the KKBBQ-less version of the show are $7 and starts at 10pm, 18+

If you already bought a ticket, Up To Eleven will be giving out refunds at the “point of purchase.”

De La Soul’s 20 Years High and Rising Tour

September 29, 2009 Art, communication, The Rathaus

(via Grandcrew)
De La Soul is not dead! You better believe it! The 3 New Yorkers reminisce on stage over their 20-year strong career in a global tour that pays tribute to their first album “Three Feet High And Rising”. Their Paris concert was off the hook, proof that their beats have not lost impact and that the years have NOT affected their energy and sense of humor. Mad respect!”

Live Recap: Woods

In the middle of the Woods‘ set on September 9th, I overheard a crowd member declare, “It’s a bunch of freaky, open-chord guitar strumming, and I love it!” Although simply-put that statement serves as a perfect synopsis of the band’s performance at the Jackpot Music Hall in Lawrence, KS.

Woods began their set by building an instrumental track from tape loops and sampled sounds before launching into their more streamlined, pop-infused version of freak-folk. Once they did, the audience became instantly hooked on the high-pitched melodies, the harmonic interplay between musicians and the sudden outbursts of fuzzy guitar riffs that reside somewhere between Neil Young’s “Everyone Knows This is Nowhere” and the prog-rock of Can. Combine that with the floor-sitting, knob-turning noise-maker who added the freak to the folk by manipulating his own vocals with a plethora of devices and Woods was able to eclipse the quality of their record “Songs of Shame.” However, the show, like their latest album, did seem to suffer at times because of the repetitive nature of their sound; yet not a person at the show could be labeled bored or even disinterested. Proving even the simplest of guitar strums can turn into something much more compelling given the right injection of imagination and passion.
