Go See: What Would Jesus Buy?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Holiday consumerism got you down? Go see What Would Jesus Buy? this Wednesday, December 9 at 7pm. The showing of this docu-comedy takes place at Liberty Hall (644 Massachusetts in Lawrence, KS) and is brought to you by Films for Action.

Studio Synopsis:
“What Would Jesus Buy? follows Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir as they go on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse: the end of mankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt!

“From producer Morgan Spurlock (SUPER SIZE ME) and director Rob VanAlkemade comes a serious docu-comedy about the commercialization of Christmas. Bill Talen (aka Reverend Billy) was a lost idealist who hitchhiked to New York City only to find that Times Square was becoming a mall. Spurred on by the loss of his neighborhood and inspired by the sidewalk preachers around him, Bill bought a collar to match his white caterer’s jacket, bleached his hair and became the Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping. Since 1999, Reverend Billy has gone from being a lone preacher with a portable pulpit preaching on subways, to the leader of a congregation and a movement whose numbers are well into the thousands.

“Through retail interventions, corporate exorcisms, and some good old-fashioned preaching, Reverend Billy reminds us that we have lost the true meaning of Christmas. What Would Jesus Buy? is a journey into the heart of America – from exorcising the demons at the Wal-Mart headquarters to taking over the center stage at the Mall of America and then ultimately heading to the Promised Land … Disneyland.

“Will we be led like Sheeple to the Christmas slaughter, or will we find a new way to give a gift this Christmas? What Would Jesus Buy? may just be the divine intervention we’ve all been searching for.

“The Shopocalypse is upon us … Who will be $aved?”

Films for Action presents: “RETHINK Afghanistan”

Monday, October 26th, 2009

rtaposter

Films for Action presents RETHINK Afghanistan this Wednesday, October 29 from 7:00pm – 8:20pm at Liberty Hall (644 Massachusetts in Lawrence, KS).

From Films for Action:
“We must rethink our policy toward Afghanistan. Help raise public visibility of this issue in Lawrence by attending this event and getting as many people you know to attend as well.

“If you already consider yourself firmly anti-war and are thinking about skimping out on this film, hold on! Even the most die-hard geo-political savvy folks will learn something they didn’t know from this film. If you’re new to the debate it will be a great crash course for what we’ve been doing over there for the last *eight* years and whether the official reason for this war stands up to logical scrutiny. If you’ve been staying current with the issue, it will be a great chance to get freshened up on all the different issues so you can advocate your position more persuasively. I realize most of us probably don’t need any more convincing that the war should be brought to an end, so look at this film as an opportunity to raise awareness of the issue beyond the choir. We need to expand our numbers, and build a consensus across political lines.”

Go See: It Starts With Murder!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

itstartswithmurder

From the creators:
“You’ve heard of low-budget movies? How about a NO-budget movie? Shot for 500 bucks over a three year stretch, It Starts With Murder! combines nonexistent production values with a flamboyant trash-culture aesthetic to tell a story that is equal parts John Waters and Mario Bava.

“The premise: A black-gloved killer stalks the guests of a fabulous resort. It’s up to world famous detective Miss Mandrake to solve this string of brutal slayings… But can she unmask the murderer before he strikes again? More importantly, does she even want to?

“Starring Curvacia VaVoom of The Spook Lights in her first headlining role, It Starts With Murder! is a sleazy melodrama taken to the most horrific extremes. Keep your eyes peeled for standout performances by members of Lawrence’s own EMU Theater troupe, as well as cameos from members of Weird Wounds, Stull, and Betelgeuse Betelgeuse Betelgeuse.

“It Starts With Murder! screens on Wednesday, October 21st at 6:30 pm at Liberty Hall (644 Massachusetts in Lawrence, KS ). Tickets are a measly $1– how can you beat that?”

Starring: Curvacia VaVoom, Adri Pendergrass, Nathan Cadman, Misty Nuckolls, Andrew Stowers, James Hogwood, Kevin Corcoran, Ryan Nessmith, Aaron Larkin, and Shawn Franklin
Screenplay By: Scary Manilow and Curvacia VaVoom
Directed By: Robert Gillaspie
