It will feature over 150 vintage and limited edition photographs, and monumental sculptures and paintings by the inner circle of Max’s artists, including John Chamberlain, Forrest Myers, Larry Zox, Neil Williams, and Andy Warhol. A highlight will be Myers’s recreation of his famous laser/jukebox installation.

The exhibition will launch Max’s Kansas City: Art, Glamour, Rock and Roll (Abrams Image, Sept 2010), a vibrant chronicle of the famed venue. The book will feature luminous photography by Bob Gruen, Anton Perich and others, and writing by Lou Reed, Lenny Kaye, Danny Fields, Lorraine O’Grady, and Steven Watson. It is edited by Steven Kasher.

There has never been a more exciting collision of art, music, and glamour than at Max’s Kansas City in the 1960s and 70s. At Max’s you could hang out with Andy Warhol, argue about art with John Chamberlain, or get a record deal just by showing up. Downstairs the artists were paying tabs with original art, upstairs was home to the iconoclastic New York music scene, featuring the Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls, and yet undiscovered stars such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Blondie, Iggy Pop, and Madonna. Max’s incubated more artists and musicians in New York’s 60s and 70s cultural heyday than any other scene.

“Max’s Kansas City was the exact spot where Pop Art and Pop Life came together in the 60s –teenyboppers and sculptors, rock stars and poets from St. Mark’s Place, Hollywood actors checking out what the underground actors were all about, boutique owner and models, modern dancers and go- go dancers—everybody went to Max’s and everything got homogenized there.” -Andy Warhol

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11-6 pm.

View more images from the show here.

Print

Art Roundup: August 6, 2010 to August 13, 2010

Art

event

gallery

Lawrence

Weekly roundup of the best art shows and art related events in and around the Lawrence/Kansas City area. His drawings become abandoned scenes full of misleading clues to the most banal of mysteries – the everyday.

posted by: Scott Stewart

Print

Art Roundup: July 9, 2010 to July 15, 2010

Art

culture

The Rathaus

art

event

film

gallery

gallery opening

Lawrence

music

watch

Weekly roundup of the best art shows and art related events in and around the Lawrence/Kansas City area.

FRIDAY JULY 9

Sonic Youth - Sleeping Nights Awake (Documentary) Michael Albright

• SONIC ORPHANS: Lost Music Films 1965-87 Wonder Fair: Art Gallery, Shoppe & Studio (803 1/2 Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, KS) Friday, July 9, 7-12pm From the organizers: SONIC ORPHANS is a compilation reel of lost and found clips projected on 16mm, mostly silent, of some rare celluloid gems that have been seen by almost no one and have never seen the light of youtube. We hope to raise money and awareness for a good cause while getting people excited about local film making. We provide a secret theme and you have 48 hours to create a working short film – no longer than 5 minutes. You provide us with the short films and we provide you with a great venue, judges and prizes for the winners! Proceeds from our ticket sales benefit local organizations such as Habitat For Humanity, Halo Foundation, and Children’s Mercy Hospital. The judges were blown away by the quality of films this year. Along with the typical gang of local judges, we also enjoyed the company of local comic book writer Jai Nitz. He has written several comics for D.C. and Marvel. He is currently working on Hollywood movie comic tie-ins, such as the upcoming Green Hornet.
