The name Parra should resonate with any person relatively well-versed in the realm of street culture. With an influence spanning art, sneaker design and even more recently, furniture, the Amsterdam-based artist has had the uncanny ability to make many things he touches into a solid hit. We focus on the efforts of Parra in the past and more recently as well as his background.

The opening reception for Rest For the Wicked will be held at The Shooting Gallery on Saturday, August 14, 2010 from 7-11pm. The exhibit will be on display through September 4, 2010 and is free and open to the public.

Exhibition Statement:

Highly inspired by bedtime stories and comic book consumption as a child, Ferris Plock‘s resulting nostalgia drives the creation of his art today. Plock utilizes his art practice as a mental and emotional outlet, where he illustrates the childhood spirit of make-believe and fantasy. The artist, a storyteller by nature with a formal education in creative  writing and modern literature, easily capsulates a full narrative voiced  through a single character. He breathes a sense of humor and cheer  into his pieces by depicting unexpected characters (such as Tuff Taco), monsters and animals in everyday human conditions. He cites Japanese comics and cartoons as consistent influences for his work as well as traditional Ukiyo-e wood block prints. His works are primarily on wood panels, canvas and found objects in which he often times employs the use of unconventional materials such as house paint, wood stains and gold and silver leaf.

About D.I.Y. America:

D.I.Y. America is a serialized show focusing on leaders in the youth/punk/DIY movement. Subjects include over two decades of leaders from the skateboarding, punk, grafitti and hip-hop worlds. Assembled using footage shot for (but never included in) the Beautiful Losers film. Examples include: Ian MacKaye, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Glen Friedman, Tony Hawk, etc.

Artist Bio:

Os Gêmeos (Portuguese for “The Twins”) are identical twin brothers from São Paulo, Brazil. They started painting graffiti in 1987 and gradually became a major influence in the local scene, helping to define Brazil’s own style. Stylistically, Os Gêmeos are heavily influenced by the cryptic art of the São Paulo–based pixação graffiti movement as well as American hip-hop, which the twins grew up with in Brazil. The brothers have gained international fame, displaying their work in exhibitions in major cities in the U.S. and Europe, including Deitch Projects in New York and Tate Modern in London.

“Judith Supine is a collage artist living in Brooklyn, NY. Supine could not speak until a month after his seventeenth birthday. He could not physically articulate words, he could only squeak and grunt. Supine often drew pictures to communicate with his family. His mom saved all of his pictures, just one of many reasons why his mom is great.

“Judith Supine uses materials that are free or at least real cheap. He uses an exacto-knife, glue sticks, cheap ugly paints and real sleazy magazines that make him sexually uncomfortable. Judith Supine gets his magazines out of people’s trash, from the public library, from the dentist’s offices, from his little sister’s magazine collection, from bankrupt porn shops.” (source: Paper Monster)

His pseudonym Judith Supine is a tribute to his grandmother of the same name.

National Lampoon’s Matt Zaller, specialist in the art of creepy-but-funny interviews is back. In this edition Zaller sits down with Will Arnett to chat about his upcoming role in the rather lame-looking romantic comedy When in Rome. But instead of talking about the film the conversation quickly shifts to dicks and continues to digress from there into hipsters, creeps, Scrabble, New York, weird handshakes, shoes and Dr. Scholls inserts.
