In these giddy days of club hits and stripped-down lo-fi rock songs, it takes a special band to release a dense, hour plus mix of droning samples, chanting voices, and angular disjointed post punk. And quite honestly, it takes a special music listener to follow any band down such a long, winding, sometimes frightening path as the one Clipd Beaks' new album To Realize leads.

If you like short, concise songs about girls and guitars, Clipd Beaks is not your kettle of tea. If you're into “glistening” pop hooks, or pop hooks at all for that matter, To Realize - or any of the Oakland Trio’s previous releases – is not for you. But, if you are enticed by sometimes screaming, sometimes droning voices and almost-out-of-tune guitar lines winding around a funeral dirge of slow beats, mixed with claustrophobic yet frantic guitar surges – well then, my child of the obtuse and slightly abrasive, well then…

The latest buzz around To Realize finds that Clipd Beaks, together since 2003, have finally come together as a cohesive, noise/music making outfit. If you’re willing to spend some time and energy digesting an album, or just have a bunch of floors to wash and need something with a beat to work to while still keeping that whole “I’m in the midst of some horrible sacrificial ritual” vibe of the process – then may I suggest checking out this album. It also makes a great soundtrack for some Dark Ages historical fiction reading...or so I’ve heard.
