Charlotte Gainsbourg’s video for the single “Heaven Can Wait,” which also features Beck, is all the rage right now on the interwebs. However, much of the attention it’s getting has more to do with director Keith Schofield’s use of appropriated images from sources like ffffound.com than with the quality of the song. Exactly which images were appropriated? Probably all of them but some are more egregious than others. For instance, the skateboard on hamburgers image and the floating forms of fabric used in the video were taken directly from artist William Hundley’s original work without giving him credit or money for the idea. Many of the other non-sequitur images reference some of the internet’s most widely seen memes. There is a great discussion about the video and the inspirations behind many of the appropriated images going on here. Personally the only way I wouldn’t have a problem with this would be if Schofield shared his revenue from this job with all the artists and photographers he ripped off. It’s still a pretty good song though.
