King-Cat Comics at Wonder Fair

KingCat

This Friday, October 30 from 6-9pm King-Cat Comics and Drawn & Quarterly present John Procellino on the Road at Wonder Fair Art Gallery (803 Massachusetts in Lawrence, KS). The event will include a slide show, book signing and conversation celebrating 20 years of King Cat Comics and the release of Porcellino’s new collection Map of My Heart.

From the gallery:
“John Porcellino was born in Chicago, in 1968, and has been writing, drawing, and publishing minicomics, comics, and graphic novels for over twenty-five years.

“His celebrated self-published series King-Cat Comics, begun in 1989, has inspired a generation of cartoonists. Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man, a collection of King-Cat stories about Porcellino’s experiences as a pest control worker, won an Ignatz Award in 2005, and Perfect Example, first published in 2000, chronicles his struggles with depression as a teenager. King-Cat Classix, published in 2007, is a comprehensive overview of the zine’s first fifty issues, and Thoreau at Walden is a poetic expression of the great philosopher’s experience and ideals.

“According to cartoonist Chris Ware, ‘John Porcellino’s comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive.’”

Tragically Delicious: The Bittersweet Art of Angie Mason and Kristen Ferrell

Tragically Delicious: The Bittersweet Art of Angie Mason and Kristen Ferrell, will open at New Jersey’s Parlor Gallery on Saturday, November 14. For this special event the gallery is being transformed into a bakery full of paintings, drawings, sculptures, clothing and even some slightly twisted baked goods. On a side note, Kristen Ferrell used to call Lawrence, KS home and we’ve loved Ferrell’s work since we noticed her t-shirt designs around town back in 2005.

Go See: Food Fight

food_fight

“When we walk into a supermarket, we assume that we have the widest possible choice of healthy foods. But in fact, over the course of the 20th century, our food system was co-opted by corporate forces whose interests do not lie in providing the public with fresh, healthy, sustainably-produced food.

“Fortunately for America, an alternative emerged from the counter-culture of California in the late 1960s and early 1970s, where a group of political anti-corporate protesters–led by Alice Waters–voiced their dissent by creating a food chain outside of the conventional system. The unintended result was the birth of a vital local-sustainable-organic food movement which has brought back taste and variety to our tables.

Food Fight is a fascinating look at how American agricultural policy and food culture developed in the 20th century, and how the California food movement has created a counter-revolution against big agribusiness.”

We Lawrencians can catch a special one-night-only screening of Food Fight at Liberty Hall on Thursday, November 12th at 7pm. Following the screening, director Chris Taylor will hold a live Q&A session and food reception.
