This event, which is free and open to the public, will feature live music by local bands, performances by various artists and the opening of the annual Children’s Art Exhibition, which features works from the Spencer’s “It Starts with Art” program.
Student cultural groups and local artists will have booths displaying artwork and information about their cultural backgrounds. Participating performance groups include the KU African Drum and Dance Ensemble, the Peruvian Association, artist Dave Loewenstein from The Percolator, and BMX bikers.
Lawrence bands performing include Bebob Flim Flam, Panda Circus, and Random Rain.
Co-coordinator of the festival Melissa Melling says the event will be fun and educational for students and families. “We want to enhance the Lawrence community by encouraging multi-cultural and art appreciation,” Melling says. “The festival will create interaction between all categories of art by including audio, visual, and performance pieces, and that will hopefully inspire creativity in visitors.”
Festival-goers can get creative by decorating organic tote bags. Other fun family activities will include a screening of Dr. Suess’ The Lorax in the Museum auditorium, a giant Twister mat and face painting. Artwork from the children’s “It Starts with Art” classes will be displayed right inside the Museum’s Lobby Gallery. In conjunction with the Spencer’s A Tradition Redefined exhibition, there will also be a Chinese ink painting demonstration.
