Media Facades Festival – Berlin 2008

The Media Facades Festival takes place this week in Berlin. The event is organized by mediaarchitecture.org and brings together participants from a wide range of design backgrounds, all of which are interested in the use of public space. Through meetings and workshops the festival uses collaboration to positively affect the “approach to technology, architecture and media art in modern cities.” The Rathaus’ own s.a.johnson conducted an email interview with the festival’s Exhibition Director and Co-Curator Gernot Tscherteu to discuss, among others, the emerging field of media architecture, designing digital facades and the influence of Blade Runner on modern design.

Cinema Style: The Conformist

Bernardo Bertolucci‘s 1970 film The Conformist is a stylistic masterpiece, not only in its cinematography but also simply in the styling itself. Fashion and film have a close relationship. Designers create costumes for films and in turn films inspire the collections of designers. Set in 1930′s France and Italy, authentic upper class fashion of the time is captured through a 1970′s lens. Hats and furs, ribbons and gowns create a slightly enhanced and imaginative world in which the characters live. It is an unrealistic world the main character Marcello Clerici has created for himself to escape his past and conform to a fascist society. Critically acclaimed as one of Bertolucci’s best, The Conformist is a must see for fashion lovers and film lovers alike.

Boo and Boo Too CD Release Party

Rock music is about energy, not perfection. A band like Boo and Boo Too understands such a premise. The members of the band don’t really play their instruments, instead they feverishly attack them like kids on caffeine with little regard for technical prowess. “No Tempo,” the latest album by Boo and Boo Too, features that same contagious energy throughout 10 original tracks. Squeals, fuzz and cymbal crashes envelop each song but the noise never overwhelms the solid melodies that lurk beneath. “I’ll Be Your Whore,” the first single from the record, is full of catchy vocal hooks but it is the instrumental build-up and explosive crescendo that stick to your brain. Look for Boo and Boo Too on their “Mothers Against Noise” tour and if you are in Lawrence, KS tonight October 9th stop by the “No Tempo” CD release party at Replay Lounge. For everyone else, the “No Tempo” official release date is October 14th through Iron Paw Records.

Wayne Propst’s Munny

Consider this our final installment of Munny madness here at The Rathaus, at least for now. In this segment, watch as a contraption designed by artist Wayne Propst proves that everyone, even a small vinyl toy, is full of piss.  Propst’s Munny was squished at the October 4th reception for the  “Munnys That Bring Happiness” show held at the Lawrence Arts Center.
